Our Home is our castle
This contemporary articulation of the traditional Viennese municipal housing estate is situated amid the heterogeneous urban environment of Vienna’s 22nd district.
The idea of the design is to counterbalance, architecturally as well as socially and functionally, the constructional and social mishmash of the environment. Formally, the building has a clear, compact silhouette which informs an identity-establishing landmark presence amid the indistinct fabric of the built environment. The reduced and rather closed street facade shields off a quiet interior courtyard with a community garden for use by all residents. All apartments are accessible from this courtyard.
Through a generous stairwell which receives daylight from three sides access balconies are reached that connect a maximum of eight apartments into easy-to-familiarize residential subcommunities. The circulation areas at the same time are an extension of the courtyard and hence additional usable outdoor space. The sunny walkways alongside the facade intermittently widen into balconies that can be used by the two neighboring apartments for joint meals or for partying.
