EBS – Electronic Based Systems Center (TU Graz)

BIM is Magical

The new EBS Center on the Graz University of Technology’s Inffeld Grounds was designed as a freestanding single building that marks a start or end point. Its characteristic six-story east façade unfolds an urban front facing the campus and establishes a strong address identity. The stepped design down to the plinth level makes for a smooth transition to the adjacent green areas and small-scale built-up surroundings.

The built volume is structured into a plinth that accommodates lab and research facilities and, above it, a central-plan office building. The compact centralized core comprising the stairwell and service rooms facilitates short circulation distances, with concomitant advantages with respect to both the escape route plan and everyday working processes.

Through the central east-side entrance, one enters a generous lobby and, adjoining it, a seminar room with floor-to-ceiling glazing on two sides, which opens the space to the lobby on the near, and to the outdoor green area on the far side.
A row of informal meeting booths offers niches for retreat, which further upgrade this circulation area. The office spaces on the upper floors are arranged in a U-shape around the building core. The communication spaces are conceived as an expansion of the centralized circulation well and are also oriented toward the green outdoor spaces. Story-high vertical slats provide a “technical design” skin that envelops the building.

In the EBS Center, AllesWirdGut explores new avenues in building design: this is their first project planned as an “Open BIM project” involving all specialist consultants from the start.
This makes it possible to have an exceptionally well-detailed project already at an early planning stage.
