DST – Realization Competition Residential District Dresdnerstraße

An Urban Catalyst

On Dresdnerstraße in the 20th district of Vienna, by the junction with Traisengasse, a new residential quarter is projected as a kick-off to a larger urban development in the area of the former Northwestern Rail Station.

AllesWirdGut brought to the competition a lively design which caters to present-day residential needs, redefining concepts of densified urban living. The new buildings on two different sites take up main urban-design points of the master plan for the Northwestern Station and together form a strong, identity-establishing ensemble.

In the proposed design, new urban open and green spaces, alignment with existing block perimeters, and the accentuation of important visual axes integrally relate to the projected architecture.

One part of the concept is the integration of a high-rise complex that marks the east-side access to the main transverse of the development area, along the tree-lined Traisenallee boulevard, crossing Nordwestbahnstraße and leading up to Wallensteinplatz and on to Friedensbrücke. The space on the southwest side of the high-rise is left open, creating a vital and exciting shared public space by Traisenallee. Other planned elevated points accentuate the projected Traisenplatz square as well as the transition zone to the central green area of the Northwestern Station premises, developing, especially in context, a catalytic urban-design effect.

Aside from plans for a large number of housing units, the concept also provides for various public facilities, distributed all over the area, to help and add to everyday life in the city, including a kindergarten, a police station, and neighborhood stores as well as a public educational institution which will be accommodated in the central high-rise building.
